To kick off the New Year (and new decade!), here are just a few of the fun homeschool-friendly events going on in January. Enjoy!
Thursday, January 2 — Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Tournament at the Duluth Library; 2pm to 4:30pm. Compete to see who’s the best! This tournament is open to kids age 8-18, and follows official Smash Bros. Tournament Rules (see below). 32 players max., participants must pre-register at the link above to hold their space. Drop-ins are welcome if a space opens up. FREE.
- Matches will be set up as 1 v 1
- Players will have three lives in each round. Each round will be 4 minutes long.
- No outside equipment will be permitted. Gamecube controllers will be used.
- Stages will be chosen at random by the computer.
- No items will be permitted to be used during the tournament.
- Once the tournament starts, players are not allow to change their character.
- Players who pre-registered will have priority to enter. Space for 32 Players.
- Walk-ons will be allowed if there is space on the day of the tournament.
Friday, January 3 — Feeding Friday at Autrey Mill Nature Preserve; 4:30pm. Feeding Fridays are scheduled on select Fridays (usually the first Friday of the month) at 4:30 pm. Guests get a hands-on opportunity to learn the husbandry techniques for Autrey Mill’s animals. This event is open to the public, and no registration is required. Be here at or a little before 4:30. Only the first 30 participants will be allowed entrance. $2 per participant or Free for Family Level Members
Please note this is a “grown up and me” experience.
Tuesday, January 7 — Homeschool Day at Zoo Atlanta; Homeschool families are welcome on the first Tuesday of every month at a discounted rate. No advanced reservation required. Register as a walk-up at any admission window upon arrival for Homeschool Field Trip Day for $14.99+tax. Homeschool groups of 10 or more should pre-register at the link above, and can enjoy Homeschool Day at the Zoo for $10.99+tax (and a free chaperone ticket). Add to the educational experience by using our standards-based curriculum guides and grade-specific activities before, during and after your visit.
Wednesday, January 8 — Homeschool Day at Panola State Park; 2pm-4pm; Homeschoolers are invited to join our Interpretive Ranger for our monthly homeschool program on the first Thursday and second Wednesday of each month. Designed for children ages 6-12 to introduce them to a variety of nature-themed topics. Cost is $8/child. Call 770-389-7801 to register. Space is limited. The topic for January 8 is “Hibernation.”
Thursday, January 9 thru Saturday, January 11 — Holiday Model Trains at the Atlanta Botanical Garden; These are the last few days to check out the Garden’s Holiday Model Trains. Take a journey around the holiday model train garden! G scale choo-choo trains and a holiday trolley chug along seven tracks on this whimsical, beautifully landscaped mountain layout. Watch in delight as the trains emerge from tunnels, cross bridges over rippling lake, and soar across trestle bridges. Small towns, train stops, a holiday workshop and other unique features dot the landscape. FREE with Garden Admission.
Monday, January 13 — Summerly Homeschool Park Day; These monthly park days are for Summerly members and potential members to get together and socialize. Time: 11am-12:30pm; Location; TBA. If weather is too bad for outside time, an indoor location & activity will be planned.
Tuesday, January 14 — Homeschool Science Day at Chattahoochee Nature Center; 1:45pm to 3pm; Join naturalists and docents for fun lessons and learning about nature on 127 acres within the Chattahoochee Watershed. The theme for this year is Tools of Taxonomy, learning about taxonomy and classification. Monthly sessions will be active learning times utilizing the grounds and resources of CNC that will help your students gain knowledge of science principles as well as skills such as team work, problem solving, communication and critical thinking. This program is designed for children ages 5+. Parent involvement is encouraged. Included with General Admission and Free to CNC Members.

Tuesday, January 14-Thursday, January 16 — First week of LEAD Homeschool’s Spring Semester; LEAD offers three days of a la carte classes each week, for homeschoolers preK-Adult, during a 15-week semester that runs January-May. Participants must be LEAD members and register online through their website in order to take classes.
Wednesday, January 15 — Homeschool Open House at Discover Science Center; 10am to 12pm; Join us during our Homeschool Open House to meet our educators, check out our labs and critters, learn about our upcoming homeschool courses and workshops, and do a little science. PLEASE SHARE with your homeschooling friends! Here is our homeschool schedule for the upcoming semester. Only one ticket is needed per family. Location: Discover Science Center (suite 5) and STEM Lab (suite 21) – 2500 Old Alabama Rd, Roswell. FREE!!
Friday, January 17 — Homeschool Skate at Sparkles Gwinnett; 12pm to 4pm; Come out for this monthly homeschool skate day at Sparkles of Gwinnett in Lawrenceville. The $5 admission includes skate rental and indoor playground (under 50″). Pizza Pitcher Combo is $10. Skate trainers are $5 each.
Saturday, January 18 or Monday, January 20 — Summerly Homeschool Field Trip; Members are invited to purchase tickets and meet up at License to Chill Snow Island at Lake Lanier. Final decision on date/time will be announced on the private Summerly Homeschool email list.
Get your adrenaline fix at Snow Island tubing on the 575 feet long, 8-story high Parrot Mountain slide, one of the fastest snow rides in North America! Take a spin around the ice rink, bounce in the inflatables at LandShark Landing, or play in the snow! New this year is a fun scavenger hunt to find Santa and get your photo with him. Fun in the snow continues at Snow Island until February 23, 2020.
Wednesday, January 22 — Cosmetic Chemistry Homeschool Workshop at Discover Science Center; 12pm-1:30pm; Ages 13+. Students become cosmetic scientists as they experiment with chemistry, including acid-base reactions and saponification, to design, create, and test new, custom bath products. Instructor: Christina St Martin, MSc candidate. Location: STEM Lab (suite 21). Cost: $20 (preregister online at the link above).
Thursday, January 23 — Chemical Reactions Homeschool Workshop at Discover Science Center; 9:30am-11:30am; Ages 8-10. For kids that LOVE experiments. In this lab, we investigate endothermic and exothermic reactions, experiment with reaction rates, and conduct a single replacement reaction. Instructor: Tonya Shearer, PhD. Location: Science Center (suite 5). Cost: $25 (preregister online at the link above).
