Who we are:
Summerly Homeschool is a local and online resource focusing on secular homeschooling in and around metro Atlanta and beyond. Our philosophy hinges on the freedom of homeschooling and on experiential learning through books, games, outdoor exploration, hands-on experiences, art, music, and creating/making.
We post about subjects that we hope appeal to homeschoolers wherever they may be located, as well as sharing info on all the amazing homeschooling opportunities in our area and throughout the state.
Who I am:
My name is Shawne, and I’m a wife, mother, writer, teacher and more. I’ve been homeschooling since 1997. Our oldest son homeschooled all the way through high school, then spent a year in college before deciding to start working instead. Our youngest is 9, and excited to be homeschooling too, just like his big brother.
For us, homeschooling is not just an education choice, it’s a way of life. It’s something that we all do together as a family, and completely informs how we live our lives. We’re relaxed, eclectic, hands-on homeschoolers who value exploration, non-traditional thinking, and seeing that learning happens every day, all around us.
Our homeschooling days include cooking, eating, reading, gaming, gardening, technology, history, movies, outside time, inside time, family time, park days, field trips, puzzles, lots of books, some workbooks, art time, local homeschool classes, travel, music, and so much more. You’ll find bits and pieces of all of those things here, throughout the site.
In addition to homeschooling my own boys, I’ve been part of a local, secular homeschool group since 2000. Through the group, I’ve advised new homeschoolers, shared our experience creating a high school homeschool transcript for our teen, organized activities, and taught a variety of classes. I am also a professional freelance writer and editor, and have written about homeschooling issues for Atlanta Homeschool magazine and Home/School/Life magazine, and their blogs.
With Summerly Homeschool, I’m hoping to share my experience and our passion for homeschooling with everyone who finds their way into this little corner of the Internet. I am (still) in the process of working with other homeschoolers to create Unit Studies and Lesson Plan pdfs that will be available at some point through the Summerly shop.
In the meantime, I’ll try to keep posting lots of new information for homeschoolers near and far, provide a monthly calendar of events, feature guest bloggers, hold a few giveaways, and maybe organize local park meet ups in areas north of Atlanta (mainly in the Duluth/Norcross/Peachtree Corners/Roswell areas).
I hope you find what you’re looking for here — answers, support, advice, or just a glimpse into what homeschooling looks like to us. Thanks for stopping by!
